A prompt to check before the first task.

Work through the list with the people responsible for the job. Record what was checked, what still needs an answer and who will follow it up.

This is a general planning aid. It is not legal advice, a substitute for a risk assessment or a complete checklist for every project. Check the requirements that apply to your work and jurisdiction.

Before work starts

Use the points below as a conversation starter.

The work, sequence and people responsible are clear to everyone involved.
The current drawings, specifications and instructions are available to the people doing the work.
Hazards have been identified, and the controls are understood by the people exposed to them.
Required inductions, training, licences, SWMS and permits have been checked for this work.
Plant, tools and equipment are suitable, available and checked before use.
The work area, access routes, storage and housekeeping arrangements are ready.
First aid, emergency contacts, evacuation and incident reporting arrangements are known.
The team has had a chance to ask questions, raise concerns and stop if the conditions change.
Someone is responsible for recording the briefing, checks, open actions and evidence.
